PoEthics
Giacomo Scavello has been Marie Sklodowska-Curie postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies. His research project, PoEthics, is in ethics and intellectual history of ancient Greek literature and thought, with a special focus on Epic and Tragedy and their reception in recent and contemporary moral and political philosophy.
The project engages with contemporary ethical strands in continental philosophy and feminist thought which put at the core of moral discourse the role of practical reason, emotions, luck, care, and vulnerability. With a focus on the moral dilemmas of evil, violence and injustice depicted in ancient Greek Epic and Tragedy, especially in Homer and Sophocles, PoEthics aims to explore the role of bonds of affection in ethics.
Before joining Utrecht University in February 2023, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Verona within the research project METra, where he also obtained his PhD in classics and classical reception. He received his BA and MA in classics and ancient philosophy from the University of Milano ‘Statale’. He has been academic visitor and research fellow at Oxford, Berlin and Fribourg (CH).
